Mesa Verde National Park Activities

Mesa Verde National Park Activities

Mesa Verde has a number of cliff dwellings that visitors can actually hike into and experience the site. For most of these, visitors must take a ranger guided tour. Two sites, Spruce Tree House and Long House offer a self-guide option, but only seasonally. Many of the parks popular view points are easily accessable by car.

Scenic Byways: The route into Mesa Verde is a steep, narrow, winding mountain road. Depending on weather, traffic, and road construction, plan at least two hours just to drive into and out of the park. The drive is scenic with pull-offs and overlooks that provide spectacular views into four states. Trailers and towed vehicles are not permitted beyond Morefield Campground.

  • Mesa Loop Road: A 6 mile paved loop (one way) in which you can easily see 12 different sites.
  • Cliff Palace Loop Road: A 6 mile paved loop (one way) in which you can easily see mulitple sites.

Ranger Led Hikes

Tickets for ranger led hikes must be purchased in advance at the Far View Visitor Center for $3.00 per person. Once the visitor center closes in October, tickets can be purchased at the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. The ranger guided tours are strenuous but include detailed cultural and historical information and are well worth it. Visitors may only chose one, between Cliff Palace and Balcony House as they are in high demand during the busy summer months. Long House can be toured in the same day.
